Scarpa SL Active (TX) Men's Leather Extended Hiking / Trekking Boot

Scarpa

$519.95 AUD $579.95 AUD

Incredibly durable and supportive, the Scarpa SL Active Men's Leather Hiking Boot is the classic leather hiking boot. Designed for extended treks, the SL Active hiking boots can handle heavy loads and can be reliably waterproofed by waxing the leather, making them perfect for changeable Australian conditions.

The evolution of Scarpa's flagship, full-grain leather backpacking boot, the SL Activ features the classic look, durable support and incredible comfort of their original SL model, paired with a partial leather lining and Vibram® sole package that delievers lightweight comfort for any trail.

The new Scarpa SL is now built on the latest TM last shape, giving an improved heel fit and closer fit across the forefoot. The redesigned upper uses a soft nubuck leather cuff with a cut out at the achilles, as well as redesigned flex zone, giving greater comfort on long descents and ascents in the mountains. The revised speed lacing system gives a sure hold across the instep, and the plush leather lining inside the boot is instantly luxurious and comfortable. The SL is built using a 2.8mm Sherpa leather (the toughest and most water-resistant of any full grain leather SCARPA uses) impregnated with HS12 and build as a one piece construction for durable weather protection. The SL also uses the Vibram biometric trek sole for traction and support when carrying a large pack. The leather and 37.5 lining (and lack of membrane) make this a brilliant boot for warm weather trekking.

Scarpa Boots and Shoe Size Fitting Advice

For trail / mountain / approach / lifestyle products: The bigger/heavier/more supportive the product, the more you may want to upsize by .5 - 1 full size. Lighter, softer, more supple shoes can be sized closer to your measured size. Note: SCARPA Plastic mountain boots all use UK sizing; UK converts easily: 1 full size smaller than US men's size, 2 sizes smaller than US women's size. Try on with appropriate socks for your usage. The bigger the boot, the more appropriate a bigger sock. If you use orthotics or already have aftermarket footbeds, measure against the standard footbed in boot. Fit into boot for sizing/fitting the boot. Best to try on at the end of the day when your feet are larger/swollen, than when your feet are fresh to ensure good fit after a long day. Lacing can play an incredibly important part of a good fit. Be sure to play with lacing when analyzing fit. Make sure your heel isn't slipping. Make sure your toes aren't hitting the end. Approach shoes may be sized smaller for performance purposes but beware... small shoes are really uncomfortable on the trail.

Really nice boots - Reasonably light and no Goretex

This review is before any longer hikes as I was prompted after only a couple weeks of owning them.

It's very difficult to find good quality full grain leather boots that DON'T have Goretex (or similar), so I was excited to find a brand that I trust having such an offering. I don't want Goretex as I find it restricts breathability. I'm in Sydney, Australia and my feet get hot easily.

The Good:
- Although they look big and bulky, they are much lighter than I expected. Noticeably lighter than my Nicks boots. But it doesn't feel like they went cheap on materials. I think most of the weight comes out of the light but firm sole.

- Quality feeling full grain leather

- Love that there is solid piece of soft leather around the back of the heel.

- Stiff sole. I have some cartilage damage in my toes, so really appreciate stiff soles underfoot on harsh terrain to prevent too much flexing.

- Sizing is true. I've had several other Scarpa boots/shoes and am size 44 in all of them. I hike with lighter socks, so didn't need to get up a size to accommodate thicker socks. I am normally size US10.5 in trainers and most other shoes.

Things I wish were different:
- They are pretty heavily insulated, so my feet will still sweat in summer. (I bought these sight unseen, based on reviews from the web). Many people may like this, but for my needs, I wish it was thinner (or no) insulation.

- The leather around the heel is very soft and has slight cushion behind it. That means my heel is grabbing the leather more and am getting worse initial blisters during the break in process than hoped. I am highly confident it will break in fine, but it's just taking a bit longer.
